Alistair began learning the accordion when he was 7 years old at 'Jim Hutcheon's Accordion School' in Ayr. After moving to Glasgow in 1978 at the age of 13, he moved to the 'Jimmy Blair Accordion School', which was the breeding ground for some of today's finest and well established players on the Scottish music scene. With both teachers, Alistair studied mainly classical music which was instrumental in helping him to develop a solid grounding not only in musical knowledge, but in style and technical ability also. However today, his main passion lies mainly in playing music from the Scottish/Irish Traditional and Gaelic idiom, which will be easily recognisable on attending a Thistle Dubh ceilidh. Alistair took up his accordion studies again in 2004 with ex world champion Djordje Gajic (Yugoslavia), who now lives in Glasgow. It's his intention to focus on Jazz, popular classics and the further development of his overall technique as an accordion player.
